Malmaison itself was built in the 17th century, and was bought in 1799 by Napoleon Bonaparte to Josephine. After his return from Egypt, Bonaparte instructs young architects Percy and Fontan converted palace in a unique elegant and graceful style consulate. Since 1800, this small palace became the seat of government of France, where the alternate public tips, tricks, concerts, balls and outdoor activities.
After her divorce from Napoleon Bonaparte in 1809, Josephine at Malmaison continues to live up to his death, May 29, 1814.

Josephine son, Prince Eugene, becomes heir to the estate, but soon the palace was sold several times, and then bought by Napoleon III.
In 1896 Malmaison was acquired by Daniel Iffley called Osiris, who restored the palace and gave it to the state.

Museum dedicated to Napoleon and Empress Josephine was opened in 1905.
