Only Coconut palm in California

Only Coconut palm in California (USA)

Despite the fact that many California associates with palm trees, coconuts on them, as it turns out, do not grow. Yet in the "Golden State" can be found one of the coconut palms, which has already become a local landmark.

Ministry of Agriculture arguesthat the conditions of normal existence coconut palm corresponds to the zonehardiness (USDA-zone) 10a, that is, it can withstand temperatures ranging from -1.1 ° C (30 ° F) to +1.7 ° C (35 ° F), but only if a very hot summer and humid climate. California climate does not meet these temperature readings, so the coconut palm can grow in the "Golden State" is only a couple of years, and then because of the lack of heat in the ground root irreversibly weakened and does not develop in the future.

California - a place where there may be a dry climate all year long or too cold in winter. But there are always exceptions to the rule, and in a small microclimate zone in Newport Beach (Orange County), climatic conditions were suitable, and coconut trees, planted here in 1984, is still growing, albeit in the form of a dwarf.

"Coconut" problem was one of the topics discussed at the forum Gardening Association of California. Abnormal coconut palm has become a kind of pilgrimage site for gardening enthusiasts.

It is worth noting that a California palm tree is not the only such anomalous zone. In the world there are several places (Botanical Garden in Palermo and others), where the exceptions to the rule are growing coconut palms. In their natural habitat, they often grow directly in residential neighborhoods, near houses and playgrounds. Playgrounds prices thus remain at a low level.
